If you’re a silent film fan, you’ll scream (in subtitles) for this property now for sale: Charlie Chaplin’s famed Sunset Strip villa.
Chaplin – the legendary silent film icon that was probably the first movie star with a true, iconic image and brand – built the home in 1926. Since then, the three-bedroom, five-bathroom, 2,728-sq. ft. villa has been owned by several influential and well-to-do owners like Robert Downey Jr. and Kelly Osbourne. It is located at 1494 N. Kings Road.
In 2004, the home was purchased for $1,465,000. Now, it can be yours if you have $1,725,000 in the bank ready to spend.
Of course, the Sunset Strip abode is not the only home that can lay claim to being a former Chaplin property. Chaplin was known not just for his wry on-screen humor; he was also a bit of a real estate magnet, constructing or living in several homes in the area.
One in particular is located at 1085 Summit Drive, in Beverly Hills. This home, described by Chaplin as “California Gothic”, was built in 1922 and features 11,363 sq. ft. of space on a 43,000 sq. ft. lot.
Chaplin also lived in “Moorcrest”, a palatial, North African-styled home in the iconic Hollywood Hills neighborhood. This home was built in 1921 and was designed by a noted female architect (a rarity at the time). Chaplin used it as a hideaway, renting it from the original owners for a four-year time period from 1921 to 1925. (This was also when he built the Summit Drive home, evidence that Chaplin definitely had a taste for real estate.)
Finally, there is the earliest Chaplin home – a quaint 5,200 sq. ft. home that the actor inhabited during much of the 1910’s before selling it to legendary producer Cecil DeMille in 1921.
If you are into Chaplin history – or just want to own a piece of Hollywood history for yourself – any of these properties would do. Of course, right now only one is up for sale, and for $1.75 million, it can be yours!
